Brief: Design a Floating Clinic
Site: Murray River
A site analysis was conducted with 3 other group mates to further study a portion of the Murray River. From there, I picked an area where I wanted my Floating clinic to be targeting at.
I concluded in focusing in targeting the Berri-Barmera area. Mainly towards the Youth as drug abuse was a big issue in the area.
My goal for this project was to design a Mobile Floating Youth Centre that aims to empower Young
People in the Berri-Barmera area of the Murray River. It’s designed to
help young people be accounted for and have safe environments to talk
about their personal struggles.
The Centre will provide tuition to help with
their studies, build a community with other young people, and heal their
bodies and minds from addictions and abuses.
The overall boat house design was inspired from the orange fruit because of its natural produce in the area.
The Centre is split to a private area on the bottom and
public area above. The upper deck includes accommodation for volunteers
on board and also give temporary housing for any young person that’s in
need for help.
Hydrogel Walls: Like the pores that contain oil on
an orange peel, the walls of the Centre is covered with Hydrogels that
absorbs water and swells up to 400 times its size. When the air around
it heats up, water evaporates from the hydrogels, cooling the air around
it by about 5 degrees Celsius. This is to help tackle the harsh heat in
summer along the Murray river.
In the lower floor, it comprises of a waiting lobby/ reception, a kitchen and dining area, storage and 2 consultation rooms.
Side perspective of Centre. Below is a consultation room
for young people to have conversations with counselors. The open doors
allows for ventilation in the hot climate and create less formal
settings for the young person.
When Centres are docked, events and seminars can be held
in the area to gather young people to educate them of their well-beings.
It’s also a spot to encourage young people to be active and outdoors instead of being influenced by drugs and alcohol indoors.
